Cage Bedding & Litter Figure 1

Acceptable Types of Bedding and/or Litter

Above, left to right: shredded aspen, clay litter (only for litter box), Swheat Scoop (wheat), & corn cob (change often if used as bedding- best used in litter box).

Above, left to right: Critter Country (natural fiber), paper pellets, aspen chips, & walnut.

Above, left to right: EcoFresh (paper), Pet Pine, Carefresh (paper), & Cellsorb (paper).

Note: Many commercial pine pellets use specially kiln dried pine. This treatment removes the dangerous phenols found in untreated pine shavings. (Regular bagged pine shavings are air dried). When purchasing any type of pine bedding for your pet rat be sure to read the package carefully. As long as it states the pine pellets are kiln dried and you cannot detect “pine” odor then it is safe.

Unacceptable Types

Above, left to right: cedar bedding, pine, & chlorophyll treated pine. Posted on July 15, 2003, 18:07, Last updated on March 17, 2006, 14:55 | Figures
