Case history and photos

History

Zero is a 26 month old high white male housed with one cagemate.

Clinical signs

The following were observed:

porphyrin staining around right eye

dryness of surface of the eye, like eye had not been closed good

tiny lump on the surface of the eye (pimple-like)

Diagnosis

Corneal abrasion/perforation-healed

Treatment

After several days of home treatment with saline rinses and terramycin ophthalmic ointment the eye was neither better nor worse.

An appointment was made with the veterinarian. An eye stain showed the eye was scratched (possibly perforated), but as it was healing it formed a tiny bump. The vet explained that the iris of the eye came forward to fill the hole in the eye. She further explained that the eye will reconform and become smooth again. Tobramycin ophthalmic solution 0.3% drops were prescribed by the vet to be given 3 times a day to prevent infection.

Outcome

After 2 weeks of tobramycin drops the eye appears almost normal again.
