It is rapidly absorbed and results may be seen in 20 minutes to an hour. The maximum effect of this drug occurs anywhere from 2-4 hours after ingestion, and its action lasts for up to 8 hours. Furosemide exhibits an antihypertensive effect.
It is metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. It is an effective drug for use in those with a reduced glomerular filtration rate.
It is contraindicated in states of anuria, hepatic coma, and when electrolyte depletion is evidenced.
Potentiates hypotensive effects of other antihypertensive agents.
Can cause salicylate toxicity when used together.
Furosemide with aminoglycosides potentiate ototoxicity use together cautiously.
NSAIDs inhibit the diuretic response use together with caution.
EENT: ototoxicity (transient hearing loss)
GI: diarrhea
Metabolic: fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
